At the heart of Margeride, overlooking a granit hill, Châteauneuf de Randon leverages its natural assets and its rich history, thanks to Bertrand du Guesclin.

Around XIth century, back from crusades, Lord of Randon, left his castel at "Signal de Randon" in order to build, on top of Gallo-Roman ruins, Château-neuf (new-castle). A large keep that will strategically dominate the entire region. Nowadays, only one tower from the former castle is still visible and it's called « Tour des Anglais » (Englishmen Tower).

During the war of hundred years, English troops led many raids all over France and their forays reached Gevaudan. In order to free the keep occupied by English invaders, King of France, Charles the Vth, summoned Bertrand du Guesclin who started the siede in june 1380.

Unfortunately, he never witnessed the keep liberation. He died on july the 13th from a congestion. But the besieded finally surrendered to the connétable of Sancerre.

According to oral tradition, the death of Connétable Du Guesclin is due to a very cold water he drank from the source at la Clauze. Châteauneuf-de-Randon inhabitants are still indebted to their famous deliverer.

During XVth and XVIIth centuries, facing military threasts, castle of Randon has been used as a shelter for area residents.

Due to its geographical situation, Châteauneuf was a place for gathering and commercial transactions. King François the first created in Châteauneuf the first fairs in 1542.

According to legends, Gévaudan Beast haunted the area of Châteauneuf de Randon, and in particular Montbel, where he slaughtered many villagers.

Nowadays, with the medieval castle left, Châteauneuf de Randon focus comes from its large meeting place where its inhabitants like to gather and speak.
